Four county offices decide who is charged, who runs the jail and who counts your vote

The prosecutor, sheriff, auditor and clerk are all on your ballot. What have they done, and what do they promise?
Four countywide offices are on every Salt Lake City ballot. Between them they decide who gets charged with a crime, who runs the jail, who checks how the county spends your money and who runs your elections.
District Attorney
The District Attorney prosecutes all felony cases in Salt Lake County and handles the county's civil legal work and lawsuits. With a staff of 255, it is the largest prosecutor's office in Utah. That shapes who is charged and which diversion programs exist.
Sheriff
The sheriff runs the county's two jails, the Metro Jail and the Oxbow Jail, and a public safety bureau that serves court papers and handles custody and protective-order matters. The office also runs search and rescue.
Auditor
The auditor's office reviews how the county spends money and runs the county's property tax division, so it is part of how county programs are checked and how property tax is handled.
Clerk
The clerk runs your elections, from voter registration to managing the voting process. The same office issues marriage licenses, takes passport applications and keeps County Council minutes and agendas.
